5th Grade Math Constructed Response
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to visit a 5th grade classroom and review the math constructed response tool that students will be using on the ISTEP. The 5th graders had an opportunity to use the different buttons to begin the lesson to familiarize themselves with each of their functions.
Our problem focused on using the fraction symbol several times to help explain our answers. The students learned that they may need to write the number first before hitting the fraction key as sometimes it would take the last letter of the word before and put it into the top of the fraction. They also recognized that once that mistake was made they needed to delete the whole word (or most of the word) before using the fraction key again. This introduction was great for our 5th graders to ask questions and get help when needed so they would feel comfortable on the upcoming ISTEP test.
